He who would do good to another must do it in minute particulars

General Good is the plea of the scoundrel, hypocrite and flatterer

For Art and Science cannot exist but in minutely organised particulars

-- William Blake

"the Competing Predictions of Edsger Dijkstra and Douglas Engelbart"

Dang! Reading the last paragraph I thought, “Well, this ends right when it gets interesting”. Then I realized the “Excerpted from…” Clearly, I wasn’t paying attention that I’m reading LitHub. Has anyone read the book already? I’m intrigued.

The accepted contributions to Onward! Essays (2024.splashcon.org/track/splash-2024-Onward-Essays#event-overview) and Onward! papers (2024.splashcon.org/track/splash-2024-Onward-papers#event-overview) have been announced. Many of the titles/abstracts sound very relevant for our community. And three essays have authors from FoC.

📝 SPLASH 2024 - Onward! Essays - SPLASH 2024

All authors should have received an author kit from Conference Publishing via e-mail by now. It contains instructions on how to submit the camera-ready version of your essay. Onward! Essays is looking for clear and compelling pieces of writing about topics important to the software community. An essay can be long or short. An essay can be an exploration of the topic and its impact, or a story about the circumstances of its creation; it can present a personal view of what is, explore a terrain, or lead the reader in an act of discovery; it can be a philosophical digression or a deep analy ...

Special alert for Paul Tarvydas: the Onward! paper by Weiher, Hirschfeld, and Taeumel looks aligned with your quest for moving beyond function-based programming. And that reminds me that I have seen earlier work by Weiher on this topic, though I don't have concrete references at hand.

Paul Tarvydas 2024-08-26 21:04:47

Thanks!

Seems like I should mention this here, too: 💬 #linking-together@2024-08-30

[August 30th, 2024 4:11 AM] stefanlesser: Dang! I just booked my flights and will totally miss this, because I was overwhelmed by all the acronyms, ignored them all, and just signed up for the 3-day conference pass from Wednesday to Friday.

Are you all going to be in LA/Pasadena? Should we have a thread where we organize meeting up while we’re all there?

I had no idea Jonathan Edwards's landmark Subtext is almost 20 years old.

Subtext 1 (2005) is still hugely compelling. I hadn't watched this until today. If you're like me, you're in for a treat.

This work predates Bret Victor's "Inventing on Principle" by 7 years!

Jonathan, who was the audience for this particular video back in 2005? I imagine you presented in person back then?

Kartik Agaram 2024-08-30 02:11:43

In 2005 YouTube had just started up. Jon Udell had just written his blog post coining 'screencast' in 2004.

Jonathan Edwards 2024-08-30 22:24:24

I must have done this screencast as practice for my Onward presentation and as content for my blog. I miss blogging - it was so much more earnest and innocent than our social media hellscape. I keep saying this Slack should be regressed to a 90's BBS.

Kartik Agaram 2024-08-30 23:21:30

The dream is alive. In 2024 I went back over 5 years of posts on Mastodon and this Slack and a few other places and started hosting a devlog for myself on my own site. It's helpful to see just the stuff I originate, without replies to others or boosts of others (all great things, but for a different context).

I'm not quite all the way at POSSE, but rather PESOS.

The accepted list of papers for liveprog can be seen here liveprog.org and I notice that FoC is very well represented by quite some folks from this community, very nice! 😎

📝 Workshop on Live Programming (LIVE)

The Tenth Workshop on Live Programming (LIVE 2024) will take place in Los Angeles in conjunction with SPLASH 2024. LIVE invites submissions of ideas for improving the immediacy, usability, and learnability of programming.

Maikel van de Lisdonk 2024-08-30 11:16:35

I am not going in person unfortunately but present remotely (although I still have to get a final approval on this by the organization) 😊

Lu Wilson 2024-08-30 12:05:11

I'll be there! and so will all the Ink & Switch lot (like Ivan Reese)

I also know Orion Reed will be there. And I'm pretty sure @Taylor Troesh will be too

Taylor Troesh 2024-08-30 13:14:59

Yep, I'll be there! I'm speaking at LIVE and UNSOUND (maybe SLE too?) 🤠

I live in a giant cabin up in the mountains of SoCal, so I'm openly inviting everybody over after the conf. I have zero clue how many people are coming over haha. Tell your friends!

I'll be a remote participant.

Ivan Reese 2024-08-30 16:11:06

I'd love to meet up with some folks, Stefan Lesser, but I'm staying pretty far from the SPLASH venue. Not sure which days I'll be there — maybe just for LIVE?

J. Ryan Stinnett 2024-08-31 21:01:16

I'll be around for LIVE and the rest of SPLASH as well.

Jamie Brandon 2024-09-01 03:22:16

Huh, flights to LA are pretty reasonable. Not so much splash tickets though.

Ivan Reese 2024-09-01 04:58:23

Don't quote me on it, but I believe there'll be an Ink & Switch Unconf too.
